How to Ace Your Next Job Interview

Picture this: You’ve poured over the job description, the company is exciting, and your previous experience aligns perfectly with the responsibilities outlined. It feels like this role was meant for you! Now it’s time to prepare for the big interview. Whether you’re well into your career or just starting out in the industry, mastering the art of the interview is essential at any stage in life, and your skills can always be perfected and refined.

Here at PRTNR, our industry experience and knowledge have been cultivated from working in-house and from years of recruiting. We have decades of experience between the team! And since we’ve been on both sides of the interview, we’ve rounded up our top do's and don'ts for acing your next job interview.

Our Do’s

  1. Be on time: First impressions are important! Showing you’re able to be punctual is one of the first steps in showing you’re interested in the position. Another perk of arriving early? Time to calm your nerves. Whether you’re in person or on Zoom, having a few extra minutes to prepare can help you answer any tough questions.

  2. Be specific: Show how your past experiences make you the perfect fit for the role. Prepare specific examples that showcase your best skills and expertise.

  3. Share your achievements: This is your time to shine. Be sure to highlight your qualifications, especially ones that are relevant to the role. Don’t be shy about sharing your biggest triumphs.

  4. Keep it professional: Smile, focus on eye contact, and maintain a professional demeanor, even if your interviewer is more laid-back.

  5. Prepare for the tough questions: Consider the types of questions your interview may ask and plan to turn your weaknesses into strengths. Showing interviewers you can be agile in an interview can show your ability to perform in high-pressure situations.

  6. Ask questions: An interview is a two-way street! Make sure you prepare questions for your interviewer.

Our Don’ts

  1. Be afraid to ask for clarification: Is the question unclear? Ask your interviewer if they can clarify the question! Asking for clarification shows you want to make sure you accomplish tasks correctly.

  2. Give long-winded answers: Be clear and concise with your responses. Avoid over-explaining! Being direct with your interviewer shows you value their time.

  3. Lie! Honesty is always the best policy in a job interview. Be sure you stick to the truth in your responses.

  4. Speak negatively about old jobs: Maintain a positive attitude throughout your interview and focus on the positive lessons you learned from your previous roles and employers.

Here at PRTNR Recruiting, we’re with you every step of the way, from the interview to the offer to your first day. Looking for your dream job? See all of our open roles here.
